John Romita Conan (Times Two)!

Fellow blogger Mikeyboy was kind enough to hook us up with this very cool 1975(ish) pinup by none other than John Romita, Sr., which is yours for the taking for a mere $8500 (here)!

I see that John's son, John Romita, Jr., has had some Conan artwork published recently that's also worth a look...it's a variant cover for the 40th anniversary of the The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide!

And just for fun, here's Barry's original artwork, featured on the cover of Marvelmania Magazine #2...

On the off chance that you're not familiar with this, notice the minor changes between this drawing and the John Verpoorten inked cover...namely Conan's sword, the straightened axe handle (lower left), and Conan's clearer complexion...

More Conan in Brazil! Part 3!

A while back, CROM! reader Xonan was kind enough to mention that I should check out the French reworked covers from "éditions LUG"…well I’ve been looking at those covers frequently over the last couple of years (cause there's something about them that is just so damn awesome), but STILL haven’t gotten around to putting a post together…that said, here are some covers that are similar in nature – Marvel Conan artwork colored by Brazilian artists!

First up, it’s a few covers from A Espada Selvagem de Conan O Bárbaro ("The Savage Sword of Conan the Barbarian") published by Editora Abril, featuring the brilliant artwork of Barry Windsor Smith combined with the coloring of one Donizeti Amorim, along with the Marvel equivalent artwork...

And here’s a couple more by Amorim, featuring the artwork of Gil Kane…

Lastly, although not the best quality scans, feast your eyeballs on these three covers from Editora Mythos’ Conan, O Bárbaro ("Conan the Barbarian") along with their Marvel equivalents, featuring the fantabulous artwork of the master, John Buscema, and digitally painted by Brazilian Richard Riamonde...

More Conan in Brazil! Part 2!

Published in Brazil by Editora Graúna way back in 1973, it’s the “No-Royalties-For-Marvel” (hence the name change) Conan one-shot, Hartan, O Selvagem (Hartan, the Savage)!

Here’s the cover, along with the Marvel equivalent…

I couldn’t help but notice the “for adults” at the bottom of the Hartan cover, and it made me wonder what exactly might be different (or simply kid unfriendly), considering the U.S. version had the the Comics Code Authority seal of approval. Violence? Nudity? Inappropriate language? Well I had a closer look at the English version, and the only thing that really stuck out as adult in nature was this panel on pg 11, where Terhali rips Kulan-Gath a new asshole with her laser pointer finger…damn!  It's going to take more than just a mop and bucket to clean up that mess!

Barry Windsor Smith Comic Splash Pages Spotlighted at Diversion of a Groovy Kind!

One of my all-time favorite comic blogs, Diversions of a Groovy Kind, had a blog post last week spotlighting the great, epic splash panels from Seminal Conan artist, Barry Windsor Smith, and I just thought that any Conan fan should take a look at such a glorious collection!

Having run my eyes over these classic Conan comics for so many years, I feel like these pages are like old friends and I'd know them like I'd know the back of my hand, but there was something about seeing them all in one place that made me take a moment and remember a little of what those old-school Conan comics used to mean to me.
