Bigfoot Returns To Comics In Dynamite's CURSE OF THE WENDIGO

Source: Dynamite Entertainment

The Walking Dead's acclaimed artist, Charlie Adlard is teaming up with Dynamite Entertainment on a new horrific tale that will be adored by his fans! Teaming up with French TV and comic book writer Mathieu Missoffe comes Curse of the Wendigo! Curse of the Wendigo mixes true historical facts with fiction to create an unexpected story and distinctive atmosphere, beautifully rendered by Charlie Adlard's immense talent and enhanced by his innovative use of old war pictures within his artwork.

Set in France during WWI, Curse of the Wendigo follows a desperate alliance between isolated French and German soldiers, who must temporarily stop slaughtering each other to fight a new terrifying threat : the Wendigo, a creature preying on soldiers from both sides. Joining the search and destroy party is one of the very few Native Americans enrolled in the US Army at the time, who followed the evil trail of the once human Wendigo from his tribe's land up to the French trenches…

"There was a lot of research with Wendigo," says acclaimed The Walking Dead and Curse of the Wendigo artist Charlie Adlard. "I wanted an authenticity to the book - there had to be. So I spent a long time working on the real settings. Matt helped a great deal - he found me all these old postcards of the village where the climax is set, something I could not find on any search engine on the net. I firmly believe anyway, that if you draw any book set in the "real" world, it should have "real" things in them - not some fabrication in the artists mind. Which is another reason why I'm attracted to French comics - they seem to put a much greater emphasis on a sense of place as much as the people in their stories, unlike the US/UK, who emphasize the people over place. Just look at Asterix and Tintin books to see what I mean - fantastically drawn and rendered characters BUT set within a world that's totally real."

"Beyond the action and the supernatural," Curse of the Wendigo is also a drama, says writer Mathieu Missoffe. "It's a story about the madness of war, and about what defines basic humanity within one of the most inhumane conflict of modern history.

"Fans of the graphic arts live in a glorious age," adds Dynamite Editor Joe Rybandt. "An age where material that years ago would have never found a publishing home in the States, can now find such a home and we can all enjoy incredible graphic novels such as Curse of the Wendigo."

Charlie Adlard is best known for drawing the hit series, The Walking Dead with superstar artist Robert Kirkman! With The Walking Dead more popular than ever with a hit TV show on AMC, Charle Adlard's popularity has never been higher!

Adlard began his work in the UK on White Death with Robbie Morrison and 2000 AD series including Judge Dredd, Savage, and Armitage. Other work includes: The X-Files (for Topps); Mars Attacks! (also for Topps); Astronauts in Trouble (for AiT/Planet Lar); The Hellfire Club and Warlock for Marvel Comics; Batman: Gotham Knights and Green Lantern / Green Arrow for DC Comics; White Death for Les Cartoonistes Dangereux; Blair Witch: Dark Testaments and Codeflesh for Image; Shadowman for Acclaim Comics; and The Establishment for Wildstorm, amongst many others.

Adlard's style has evolved from what was originally fully painted artwork on Armitage, through increasing confidence as a monochrome artist, to his recent work, which uses large blocks of black ink on the page to create shadow effects much bolder than are commonly seen in comics art.

Mathieu Missoffe decided to take a shot at writing some of those twisted stories himself, after years of working in television production in France. Now a television writer and comic book creator, he devotes most of his TV work to French police procedurals, while exploring other genres such as Fantasy or Horror in graphic novels. Curse of the Wendigo is his second book, a blend of historical and supernatural elements brought to life by Charlie Adlard's first class artwork and Mambba's intense colouring. Needless to say, new television and comic book projects are in the pipe, including an upcoming TV thriller described as Jack The Ripper at the Moulin Rouge, co-written with Elsa Marpeau.

WEREWOLF Screenwriter Michael Tabb Joins The Monsterverse At Comic Con

Source: The Monsterverse

"WEREWOLF" screenwriter MICHAEL TABB has been added to the MONSTERVERSE HORROR COMICS ATE MY BRAIN panel at the San Diego Comic-Con 2011 on Friday from 5-6 pm in Room 9. "WEREWOLF" was originally a sequel to Universal's "THE WOLFMAN" film but has been re-worked as a new stand alone film. Tabb will be writing a sinister nod to "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" for Monsterverse's acclaimed BELA LUGOSI'S TALES FROM THE GRAVE horror anthology comic book series.

And speaking of werewolves, MONSTERVERSE ENTERTAINMENT recently unleashed the stunning cover of a werewolf for the upcoming THIRD ISSUE of BELA LUGOSI'S TALES FROM THE GRAVE by the superbly talented DAVID HARTMAN and based upon a featured story by STEVE NILES (30 DAYS OF NIGHT) and illustrated by MONSTERVERSE publisher KERRY GAMMILL (SUPERMAN).

David Hartman is one of the most in-demand horror artists working in comics and graphic design today. MONSTERVERSE is thrilled to bring his talents to BELA LUGOSI'S TALES FROM THE GRAVE #3. Currently this issue is being offered for order to shops from DIAMOND DISTRIBUTION with this code:

JUL111157 BELA LUGOSI TALES FROM GRAVE #3

The book will be coming out at Halloween along with the first book of FLESH AND BLOOD, MONSTERVERSE's new series of graphic novels as written by Robert Tinnell and illustrated by Neil D. Vokes.

You can find an excellent interview with Robert Tinnell at ComicMonsters.com.

FLESH AND BLOOD Volume One begins with the bloody destruction of the legendary vampire, the darkly seductive Carmilla. Her death ignites an epic firestorm of events that draws the greatest icons of Gothic horror into battle across the lush backdrop of 19th century Europe. At the center of this ghastly conflict Baron Victor Frankenstein is forced to merge his diabolical scientific prowess with the black arts of a terrifying supernatural world. This unholy war between light and darkness will not be measured in months or years but across centuries of horror and devastation until one force reigns triumphant. Vampires, werewolves and scientific monsters are unleashed like nothing seen before in film, comics or literature.

As Hammer, Amicus, AIP and other studios enlarged upon the Universal horror canon bringing a sexier maturity to the world's most terrifying monsters along with a more realistic savagery to the violent action, FLESH AND BLOOD brings a modern update to these classic creatures. FLESH AND BLOOD is now available to pre-order at comic shops via Diamond Distribution in its JULY PREVIEWS magazine (Page 298 next to the Frank Miller's HOLY TERROR ad) with the following code:

JUL111158 FLESH AND BLOOD GN VOL 01

We'll be announcing a special launch party for both books to be held at the American Cinematheque in the fall along with screening a surprise selection of kindred horror films in its Egyptian theater.

We will be offering previews of the work when Monsterverse takes the stage with a panel at San Diego Comic-Con. MONSTERVERSE HORROR COMICS ATE MY BRAIN. Friday. 5-6. Room 9. With Bela Lugosi, Jr., too!

From the SDCC official site: There is no escaping Bela Lugosi's Tales from the Grave horror anthology comic and upcoming graphic novel series, Flesh And Blood. Joining Monsterverse's Kerry Gammill (Superman) and Sam F. Park (The Halfway House) are Bela Lugosi Jr., screenwriter Michael Tabb (Werewolf), Robert Tinnell (Flesh And Blood), James Farr (Xombie), Chris Moreno (World War Hulk), Mark L. Miller (Ain't It Cool News), Dan Brereton (The Nocturnals), James Groman (The Hobbit), and Mike Dubisch (Aliens vs. Predator). Expect a slideshow and discussion of Monsterverse's horror projects, along with a Q&A session. SDCC 2011 Friday 5:00-6:00 Room 9

Issue #2 of BELA LUGOSI'S TALES FROM THE GRAVE comes out soon with a shocking cover by make-up legend and seven time Academy Award winner Rick Baker. Recently the LA TIMES HERO COMPLEX ran a special story on the cover and issue.

IDW Launches New GHOSTBUSTERS Series In September

Source: IDW Publishing

IDW Publishing and Sony Pictures Consumer Products are thrilled to announce the launch of an all-new, ongoing GHOSTBUSTERS comic book series. Spinning out of IDW’s hit Infestation event, and featuring Ghostbusters: Infestation scribe Erik Burham, the ghost hunters from New York City are back with exciting new adventures starting in September. Helping Burnham bring this zany story of the dead to life will be fan-favorite artist Dan Schoening (Ghostbusters: What in Samhain Just Happened?!) and popular IDW Ghostbusters cover artist Nick Runge.

“My dream since I took over the editorial duties on IDW’s Ghostbusters comics license was to bring the boys in proton packs to monthly comics,” said series editor Tom Waltz. “We’ve had fantastic Ghostbusters one-shots and mini-series up to this point, but the incredible success of Ghostbusters: Infestation has proven that Ghostbusters fans, old and new alike, are still very hungry for ghostbusting tales. With the awesome creative team we’ve gathered to make it happen, the best is yet to come!”

In this ongoing series, psychokinetic energy is on the rise again, and business is booming for the boys. Ray is troubled by what could be a prophetic dream—is this an ill omen of an upcoming apocaplypse, or just a little indigestion? These questions and more are raised in the first issue of the all-new GHOSTBUSTERS comic series. In addition, each issue will contain two pages of exclusive behind-the-scenes extras by creator Tristan Jones (Tales of the TMNT.)

IDW will offer special retailer incentive covers, including a “Who Ya Gonna call” cover by Schoening, and a glow-in-the-dark cover. Furthermore, as part of IDW’s “Be a Ghostbuster” promotion, retailers will have the opportunity to obtain a unique variant featuring up to four personalized Ghostbusters on their cover. Fans are encouraged to reach out to their retailers to learn more about these exclusive variant covers.

GHOSTBUSTERS #1 ($3.99, 32 pages, full color) will be available in stores in September 2011. Diamond order code: JUL11 0130

IDW To Launch New Star Trek Comic Series In September

Source: IDW Publishing

Classic Star Trek: The Original Series episodes reimagined in the new universe

The Star Trek universe will never be the same following the events of the game-changing, blockbuster 2009 film. Beginning with STAR TREK #1 in September, IDW Publishing and CBS Consumer Products join forces with Star Trek writer/producer Roberto Orci to explore the vast implications of the alternate timeline created by the film in a new, monthly, ongoing comics series.

"Movies cost money. Lots and lots of money," said Orci. "But comics give us unlimited budgets to take the crew of the Enterprise farther than they've ever been. Join us!"

The adventures of the Starship Enterprise continue with the new cast from the film as they embark on missions that re-imagine the stories from the original television series, along with new threats and characters never seen before.

Under the creative direction of Orci, fan-favorite STAR TREK writer Mike Johnson and artist Stephen Molnar bring this alternate universe to life and begin the countdown to the highly anticipated Star Trek sequel. The series kicks off with a dramatic new envisioning of The Original Series second pilot, "Where No Man Has Gone Before."

"Finally, new STAR TREK comics that showcase the new Enterprise crew," said editor Scott Dunbier. "The only thing more fun than reading them is editing them!"

STAR TREK #1 will feature covers from Tim Bradstreet and David Messina, plus four rare photo covers. Readers are encouraged to talk to their local retailer about the photo covers, and the super rare STAR TREK #1 signed by Orci and Johnson. The debut issue will also feature a golden ticket promotion, with more details to come shortly from IDW.

STAR TREK #1 ($3.99, 32 pages, full color) will be available in stores in September 2011. Diamond order code JUN11 0308.

The Look Of GREEN LANTERN Important To Film Makers

Source: Warner Bros

As with every superhero movie, the "Green Lantern" filmmakers knew that the fans' greatest concern was likely to be the visual representation of the world they know and love from the comics. Campbell and his creative team, led by production designer Grant Major, set out to make every location from Coast City to Oa, and each character from Abin Sur to Sinestro, just right. To that end, they took pains to faithfully recreate every detail and to enhance the imagery for the big-screen experience.

Co-producer and Green Lantern specialist Geoff Johns declares, "The first time I saw the production art, what they planned to do with the Corps and Oa and the Guardians, I was blown away. It was exactly what anyone who loves Green Lantern would dream of; my dreams for the film were realized when I saw it."

One of the oldest planets in the galaxies, the fictional Oa serves as headquarters for a race of omniscient humanoids who have dubbed themselves the Guardians of the Universe, a supreme court of sorts, who supervise the Green Lantern Corps. Oa also holds the Central Battery, the source of all energy, including the energy for the Green Lantern rings.

"Think of the universe as a sphere divided into 3,600 sectors," Johns explains. "Each sector is a kind of pie wedge, all pointing to Oa."

"Even though Oa is completely digital," Campbell says, "the design had to be organic and believable. And because it is alien, it couldn't be Earth-like in any way; the only thing from Earth would be Hal, when he arrives there. Everything else had to be fantastical, while at the same time plausible."

Major felt one of his tasks was "to make audiences believe that they were on Oa, going through this discovery with Hal. It had to have gravity and weight. We didn't want it to feel like being in a dream, but rather like an alternate reality."

The production designer relied on the film's researcher and resident comic book expert, Ozzy Inguanzo, who compiled everything the filmmakers would need to know to design the film.

"I immersed myself in over 50 years of Green Lantern comics," Inguanzo says, "I worked hard to respect the integrity of the source material and to get even the smallest details into the film, for the diehard fans, and I now include myself among them."

"It was critical to have someone on our team who was aware of everything Green Lantern, and Ozzy was terrific from the word 'go,'" Major says.

Once the overall look of Oa was established, two areas of the planet's vast terrain had to be created: the Citadel, where the Guardians reign; and the Great Hall, where Hal and the audience would get to see the gathering of the entire Lantern federation—and where avid readers of the comics will recognize many of their favorite members of the Corps.

Those integral set pieces would ultimately be accomplished through CGI; however, Major's design team did construct large-scale models of each set to serve as reference points for Campbell's staging of the scenes. The visual effects team then turned the sets into a virtual reality, where the action unfolded.

In addition to the otherworldly places, the effects team was also charged with bringing to life thousands of otherworldly characters, including Tomar-Re, Kilowog and the rest of the Green Lantern Corps. One of the most prominent characters was the Corps' most formidable adversary, Parallax, who was entirely computer-generated.

"It was critical to convey the scope of Parallax's power and malevolence, because his entire existence depends on inducing fear," says John "DJ" DesJardin, who served as a supervisor for the film's numerous visual effects.

Back on Earth, the film would require a number of practical sets as well, which were achieved entirely in and around New Orleans. Major's teams designed and built both Hal's and Hector's apartments, the latter of which Major describes as "the type of space that he probably had as an undergraduate student, but never really left, so there are layers upon layers of his quiet, introverted life all around him."

They also built Ferris Aviation's office suite, which was influenced by the art deco terminal at the area's Lakefront Airport; a party sequence dance floor and stage, for which the production actually utilized the airport exterior itself; and the steely underground bunker laboratory where Hector autopsies the body of Abin Sur, inspired by a visit to NASA and a massive building which houses fuel tanks for the space shuttles.

On a much smaller, but no less significant, scale, Major's art department was also responsible for the design of two iconic props for the story: Hal Jordan's ring and lantern.

Although they'd been careful to adhere closely to the comics for most of the film's design work, Major wanted the lantern to take its cue from the script. "I wanted it to be a bit mysterious, and to look like it originated from Oa," the designer shares. He and key concept illustrator Fabian Lacey, to whom Major credits the final look, drew inspiration for a portion of the lantern from the Fresnel lens, devised in 1823 by the French physicist and engineer of the same name.

"The whole sense of willpower being part of the emotional spectrum, and green representing that particular emotion on the color spectrum, became a component of the lantern, which reflects something of a prismatic lens motif," Major illustrates.

Property master Andrew Petrotta took the final design and created eight copies out of resin, four battery-powered and four electric, each approximately 13 inches high and weighing about eight pounds. He then antiquated them by applying scarring and dark coloring, making them look as though they'd been through battles for eons.

Several ideas were worked through for the Green Lantern power ring, which also incorporated the prism motif. Each one was tried on Ryan Reynolds' hand, to ensure that the size and shape and fit were just so. The actor's opinion was important as they wanted him, like Hal, to feel powerful wearing it, as though he could wield the ring as a weapon.

After a period of trial and error, costume designer Ngila Dickson hit on what became the final look, a perfect balance of power and masculinity. The ring was made from brass, with nickel plating, while the green stone, which carries the Green Lantern symbol, was made from dyed resin, with the intent that it, like the lantern, appear to be a relic from Oa.

Campbell states that "because the ring is one of the most powerful weapons in our 'world,' and such an important part of who Green Lantern is, it was definitely worth the extra effort to get it right."

Photos From THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Filming In India

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: TriCities.com

Christopher Nolan is trying his best to keep the details for "The Dark Knight Rises" under wraps but a group of "Cape Crusader" fans in India have managed to snap a few pics and get the skinny on some scenes recently shot in Jodhpur, India.

"Eyewitnesses and crew members told us of a particular scene being filmed, where a bald-headed child wearing ragged clothes emerges from the well and pulls his hood over his head. From the conversations, we reckon this is a young Bane, emerging from a vat of Venom, trained by Pence's Ra's al Ghul. The years of addiction to Venom builds him to be a massive monster with amped up senses, intelligence and physical prowess."

Not much, but it's something.
