Case 1:
If you do not contribute or you do not have an employer sponsored 401K plan, open a Traditional IRA account. This will give you an instant $5000 deduction in your taxes.
Case 2:
If you do contribute to an employer sponsored plan and you want to stash away an additional $5000 in another retirement plan (which by the way is an excellent idea), then you have two choices depending on your income. If your AGI is more than $167,000 then your Roth contributions will get phased out and your only option is Traditional IRA. But, in 2010 the income restriction is removed so you can convert to Roth regardless of your income.
Summary:
For me, among the two it is no brainier to pick Roth because tax free gains. If you do not belong to case 1, there are many advantages of Roth over Traditional, one of them is: no forced withdrawal.
Also, 2010 is a special year you can convert your traditional (or Rollover IRA from 401K) to Roth without income restrictions. You can pay the taxes in two years 2010 and 2011. For high income households (esp Bay Area) this is an excellent opportunity.
Regarding where to create an IRA account, I would strongly recommend Vanguard. But Fidelity and T Rowe Price are equally good. The thing to look for is the total investment cost and expense ratio of the funds you are investing in. Don't ever open an account where you have to pay commission to invest. Also avoid actively managed funds with star fund managers.
Among other things, I think all IV members regardless of where they are in their immigration journey, should contribute to the following every year:
401K: 16500 (excluding the employer match)
IRA: $5000 (Roth or Traditional)
College Savings 529: $2000 (If you have kid/nephew/niece)
TIPS/I-Series Savings Bond: Anything that you can stash away in savings.
Other Investments: S&P Index Funds, High Dividend Yield Index, International Index, Domestic and Foreign Bonds, Debt Funds
If you don't believe in equity stay with bonds but don't use stock market performance as an excuse not to save or invest in your future. This small amount of savings (approx 25-30% of your income) over your working years will get compounded and go a long way when your earning potential is not as good as it is now.
Good Luck !!!

Gold is always a great investment. It kills two birds with one stone :). Keeps Wifey Happy and good for investment. I either buy Jewelery in Vijayawada or Buy gold biscuits in Dubai airport.

the only thing you need from compnay is an Employment Verification letter. I-485 is your petition not theirs
you will have to be with current employer for atleast 180 days after you file 485. you cannot file it without employment verification letter from employer on their letterhead.
To File or not to file is your call. if you are paying for 485, just your company to provide you with employment verification letter.
you may file 485 yourself if you could compile all the documents asap. But if you have already sent out the I-693 to your company attorney as per original plan, what would you do to get it back anf file it yourself?

Hi Everyone
A BIG thank you to all those who attended the MD/DC/VA meeting in Rockville . The get together was constructive and i was hoping for few more attendees. For those who attended , i hope IV has inspired members to go and meet the local represetatives in the local offices. IV wil help you with required documentation and talking points if you need help.
Guys those who could not attend today, please make sure you followup with your represtatives and make them aware of your issues to them BEFORE any Immigration bill is discussed on the floor. you need to organize and make your voices heard in DC otherwise even if the CIR happens , it is not a guarantee that all our provisions will be addressed in that. This message is for ALL members ( irrespective of EB2, EB3 etc..)
If you need any help, please contact local chapters or IV admin starsun.
Hope we will get something done this time for EB community
Thanks
Ravi.
I have tried to contact as many as i can in last week and this week. Overall a positive response . hope to see all of the members on sunday .
Thanks

It's best to take a print of the Yates ac-21 memo, an employment letter from your new employer, any ac21 docs you filed and some recent paystubs.

I would suggest premium I-140 processing only if you want to port your old PD - possible reasons being leaving the company in future or there is an imminent risk of lay-off. Otherwise it is a waste of money.

my2cents,

Yes, you can get in trouble if your GC approved in less than 6 month AND you don't work on sponsoring company after getting ur GC.
few questions?
q?> what happens after 180 days? can employer revoke 140 after 180 days?
Company can revoke I-140 anytime (revoking approved I-140 will be called revoke, pending I-140 will be called withdraw). It will have serious impact except if revoking has been submitted after 180 days of receipt date of 485.
q?> what letter or documentation we need to get from the employer after 180 days if he is willing to let us go? since my employer is good dude and told me to get out after 180 days and do what u wanna do in life ahead.
you don't need any documentation from him as such from old employer. Employer are not obliged to revoke I-140 as such ..so it is good that he doesn't revoke ur I-140 after 180 days. even if he revokes then INS will send u NOID (notice to deny ) and then u have to submit the evidence that u are working in similar job in other company
q?> what we need to do after 180 days? if we changes employer?
I mean any forms to fill and whom/what/where to notify?
By law, it is not mandatory to inform. but it is expected that u will inform. if u get a RFE in btw (for latest pay stub) then u can submit it at that time.
as such no form to fill.
q?> can we be out of job/vacation/no intent to work for 2-4 months after 180 days?
again depend upon the situation. u can be out of job/vacation/no intent for 2-3 month as long as u have bonafide permannet offer in silimar job.
whole idea is intention, but if you are not working for GC employer then how will be u supporting urself until u r out of conutry. remember you/sponsoring compnay have to have intention of joining/hiring after green card.
u r in status as long as I-485 is pending
q?> someone mentioned that u need to be with ur employer otherwise issue when we apply for citiizenship? since the world jobs/companies are chaninging dynamic ..outsourcing..out of bussiness
Again, idea is intention. techically u can leave the job in 1 day after getting ur GC but depend upon what reason u have left that will determine .
it is ur burden to proof that it was out of your control (like layoff ) and ur intention to join the company after getting GC.
please clarify thanks!

Can you consider removing the company name in the original post? Just say "MEMS company in North East" or equivalent. Your friend might get in to trouble if he posted on a public forum that company XX is in financial trouble. That is insider confidential information and it may appear unprofessional.
BR
Thanks a lot thepaew. I will convey this to my friend.

My Attorney filed AOS for my spouse, myself and our daughters (aged 16 and 13) with filing fees of $395 each. Later on, he realised the AOS filed for 13 year WILL be rejected for improper filing fees (as the correct fee is 225 and we sent 395 and he has to re-file with correct fees, thank God PD was still current). As expected her AOS got rejected and we got RN/FP notices for all other but for her aos. I am yet to get r/n for her re-filed aos.
thanks for the clarification sheela, i think this is what we did too..except that we sent the correct fees in the first time itself.

No of posts doesn't means that I don't visit often..Yes true. Why should I read something in which I am not interested earlier..
I think there are other folks who are missing it too...It should appear right at the place where folks are making contributions (i.e. when they are clicking on contribution button) but then it may decrease the donation..I don't think letters are LARGE enough..The issue is it just doesn't feel right..I know such effort needs lot of money but employing such tactics won't help the cause. May be admin should come with better alternatives...You are dividing people here: If you don't have enough money we won't give you full information. Fine with your folks if it seems right to you but I won't agree with such strategy. It also doesn't work other way: If I contribute $300 today, one time, I won;t get access but if I do similar contribution ($25*12) I'll get THE access.. Thanks You and ALL THE BEST
I donated 3-4 days ago...one time donation of $50. Not much but did what I could. You are right, I didn't know that donor forum access was recurring donors only. Not that I want any special access, but I agree with your points. These tactics don't inspire trust and confidence.

Hi all,
I have got my Labor and I-140, waiting for 485. I have completed 5 years 2 months from my 6 yrs of H1B. Can I change organization now and use Labor and I-140 as a basis for 3 years extension?
Thanks in advance for your comments.

As a matter of fact, you gained 11 months for having 2 year EAD. Always look at the positive side and life will not be as hard.
