Red Hot Chili Peppers return with new single 'The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie'

RHCP

The last time the Red Hot Chili Peppers released a debut single from a forthcoming album, Barack Obama was still a freshman senator, Rebecca Black was only nine years old, and the music world was irrationally obsessed with Daniel Powter’s “Bad Day.”

Today Obama is president, Black is a pop star, and people remember Susan Powter better than they remember Daniel. And in the middle of it all, the Red Hot Chili Peppers remain steadfast. Sure, they have a new guitarist (longtime collaborator Josh Klinghoffer, replacing the once-again-departed John Frusciante), but if their new single “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie” (the first track from their end-of-summer album I’m With You) is any indication, things are still cool in Pepperland.

Sticking with the same mid-tempo groove that colored recent successes like “Dani California” and “Can’t Stop,” “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie” lays out a checklist for RHCP hits. Extra-funky Flea bassline? Check. Easy walking drum beat? Yup. Complementary shards of funk guitar? Indeed. Chaise-lounge philosophizing care of Anthony Kiedis? Of course. A heaping ton of cow bell? Yes and yes.

And yet something might be missing. Maybe the chorus isn’t as big as past hits, or perhaps the “Hey now” in the hook evokes too many memories of the sleepy “Snow (Hey Oh).” Still, it does feel like a back-to-basics return for the band after the circus rock excesses of their 2006 double album Stadium Arcadium, and any time the Chili Peppers take a step back (as they did on the now-classic 1999 album Californication), good things tend to happen. “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie” is no “Scar Tissue,” but the groove still feels good.

Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony to divorce

Image: Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony

Singers Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony are getting a divorce, PEOPLE Magazine reports.

"This was a very difficult decision," the couple told the magazine. "It is a painful time for all involved and we appreciate the respect of our privacy at this time."
The couple also said they have reached "amicable conclusions on all matters."
They wed in 2004 and have 3-year-old twins, Max and Emme.
Lopez was a judge on "American Idol" last season, but has not yet announced if she will return to the show. In addition to her musical career, she has starred in films including "The Wedding Planner," "Maid in Manhattan," and "The Back-up Plan."

In April, the pair announced plans for a television show together, "Q'Viva! The Chosen," with Simon Fuller, the creator of "Idol." The show was to feature the superstar couple as they traveled the world to find the best performers in Latin music, dance and other arts with the goal of creating a live extravaganza.
The show had no airdate, and it's unclear if it will continue.
Lopez released her latest album, titled "Love?" this year. Her career, which had lulled in recent years, has surged since she became an "Idol" judge.

In April, People put her on its cover declaring her the "World's Most Beautiful Woman."

The marriage was the third for Lopez, 41, and the second for Anthony, 42. He was previously wed to 1993 Miss Universe winner Dayanara Torres. She was married to dancer Cris Judd and before that, to waiter Ojani Noa. Each of their previous three marriages lasted just a year.

Timberlake tries to bring 'sexy back' to Myspace

Justin Timberlake played internet pioneer Sean Parker in "The Social Network."

(CNN)  You thought bringing sexy back was hard? Try Myspace.

Pop-star, actor and occasional reason to watch "Saturday Night Live" Justin Timberlake will apparently play a "major role" in guiding the floundering social-media site after its sale this week.
News Corporation, in effect, admitted defeat on Wednesday, selling the site for $35 million after paying a reported $580 million for it in 2005.

The buyer was Specific Media. And the first name in Specific Media's press release was Timberlake's.
"There's a need for a place where fans can go to interact with their favorite entertainers, listen to music, watch videos, share and discover cool stuff and just connect," Timberlake says in the release. "Myspace has the potential to be that place."

So, is this a twisted version of life-imitates-art?
Timberlake, of course, appeared in Facebook biopic "The Social Network" as Sean Parker, a creator of Napster and the first president of Facebook -- which, of course, played a major role in the downward spiral of Myspace.

The singer parlayed his early success with boy band 'N Sync into movie roles and a solo music career that produced such hits as "Cry Me a River" and "SexyBack."

He's more than just a name to slap on the project, apparently. Specific Media says Timberlake will have an office at the California headquarters of Myspace (unlike the roughly half of its staff that will be reportedly laid off), and a staff of about a dozen.

So, will he be able to use his on-screen experience to parlay Myspace into anything other than a joke about The Internet of the Past? The oft-snarky world of technology journalism didn't seem convinced on Thursday.
"Justin Timberlake soon to be crying a river as partial Myspace owner," blared the headline on tech blog Gizmodo.

"We're not sure how much of his cash he sunk into this sinking-est of sinking ships, but, man, wouldn't buying a bunch of Chipotle franchises or opening a club have been an easier business deal?" Gizmodo wrote.
Of course, folks on Twitter were taking their own cracks at the deal.

"This just in: Justin Timberlake also buys Blockbuster Media and a rotary phone factory. What does he see that we don't!?! #myspace," wrote user @donovanwoods.

Rihanna topples Lady Gaga for Facebook Queen title

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap) - Sorry, Lady Gaga, but Rihanna has just passed you by. At least on the Facebook charts.

The "Rude Boy" singer has overtaken the "Judas" chanteuse to become the most popular female star on the social media site, according to Famecount.com.

As of this writing, Barbados-born singer Rihanna has amassed 40,622,133 "likes" for her Facebook page, edging out Gaga, who lags with 40,580,102 "likes."

The good news for Lady Gaga? She still easily beats Rihanna on the Twitter front, with 11,653,916 followers versus Rihanna's 6,116,687. And according to Famecount's aggregated rankings, Gaga is still tops among celebrities when her combined Facebook likes, Twitter followers and YouTube views are taken into account. Star Spotting: Justin Bieber, Racecar Driver

Credit: Getty Images

Justin Bieber somehow made his way onto the ESPYs red carpet yesterday (even though it's a sports award show) and he took the whole "sports" part of it pretty seriously. Arriving in what we think is like, some kind of racecar driving suit (we pretty much failed gym every semester so we're not exactly the best people to be talking about anything athletic), Biebs hammed it up for the camera, per the usual.

Wait, why doesn't anybody talk about the fact that race car drivers ride around in what are essential snowsuits for grown-ups? Have you guys seen some of these uniforms?! We know it's probably because they're fire-retardant or something but come on, it makes Justin Bieber look like a Lego man. The injustice! But never fear: Justin changed his clothes later when he sat next to Selena Gomez in the audience.

Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl Says Drum Machines Are Bad for Rock 'n' Roll

In a recent interview with The Sun, Foo Fighters' mainman (and drummer extraordinaire) Dave Grohl was asked about the modern production techniques used by some bands, in particular the use of drum machines.
Grohl -- a long-time drummer who has manned the skins for Nirvana, Them Crooked Vultures, Nine Inch Nails and Queens of the Stone Age, among others -- had plenty to say on the issue of using drum machines.
"All that shit ruins music these days," he said. "Drum machines work for pop artists but when it comes to rock 'n' roll - don't fuck with the human element."

Grohl added: "I had favorite drummers because of their inconsistencies. Modern production has robbed drummers of personalities and it really pisses me off."
You can read the full interview here.

Foo Fighters' most recent album, Wasting Light, was recorded in a garage studio to avoid what they felt was an over-produced sound that comes from many modern rock albums. The album was included on our list of the 50 best albums of the first half of 2011, which you can find here.

Slipknot Sonisphere show to be made available around the world via satellite uploaded webcast

Slipknot has announced a special real-time Webcast of their Sonisphere performance at Knebworth via their website, Slipknot1.com to take place during their headline set at 9PM (GMT) on Sunday, July 10

The webcast has been made possible through internet technology and a satellite uplink, provided by BT, direct from Sonisphere.

Set to be an epic and emotional occasion, this highly anticipated show will mark the band’s first appearance in the UK in over two years and their first British performance without founding member Paul Gray, who tragically passed away last year.

The band said of the upcoming performance:
“England has always been a special place for this band from the very beginning. We can’t think of a better way to culminate our celebration of Paul’s life than to share it with the Maggots at Knebworth and the millions more watching around the world. This is not to be missed.”

The live webcast is also a ‘first’ for Sonisphere
Says festival producer Stuart Galbraith:
“This is the first time Sonisphere Festival has been transmitted live across the web and represents yet another major stride in its commitment to harnessing the power of the internet to engage with the rock audience at large across the planet.

“Given that this is going to be such an important event for Slipknot fans the world over, we felt it only right to allow them all to share in what is set to be a historic experience, wherever they are.”

Dave Grohl: 'Drum Machines P--- Me Off'

Dave Grohl: 'Drum Machines P--- Me Off'

Dave Grohl has hit out at bands who use drums machines and studio techniques which tighten performances, saying it robs drummers of their personality.

The Foo Fighters frontman, who of course drummed for Nirvana (and more recently Them Crooked Vultures) told The Sun how he's fed up of the trickery.

"All that sh-t ruins music these days", he said. "Drum machines work for pop artists but when it comes to rock 'n' roll - don't f--k with the human element.

He explained that this sort of production was the reason he insisted on recording "Wasting Light" in his garage, and that the art of drumming was better in the old days.

"I learnt to play the drums by listening to records", he said.
"I had favourite drummers because of their inconsistencies. Modern production has robbed drummers of personalities and it really p---ed me off.

Foo Fighters are set to play at the iTunes Festival in London on Monday, 11th July.

Weekly Chart Notes: Beyonce, LMFAO, Katy Perry

'4' SCORES: Beyonce and Adele are doing quite a number on the Billboard 200.

Beyonce's new leader "4" roars in at No. 1, a spot above Adele's former 10-week topper "21." Despite the titles' lock on the Billboard 200's top two spots, just nine solely-numerical titles (including roman numerals) have now reigned since the chart launched as a weekly survey the week of Match 24, 1956.

Beyonce Notches 4th Billboard 200 No. 1 with '4'

Coincidentally, Beyonce's "4" and Adele's "21" each share the titles of prior Billboard 200 No. 1s, by Foreigner and Omarion, respectively:

Year Reached No. 1, Title, Artist, Weeks at No. 1

1981, "4," Foreigner, 10
1986, "5150," Van Halen, three
1994, "II," Boyz II Men, five
2000, "1," the Beatles, eight
2006, "3121," Prince, one
2006, "IV," Godsmack, one
2007, "21," Omarion, one
2011, "21," Adele, 10
2011, "4," Beyonce, one
(to-date)

This week marks the first frame in which all-numerical titles have held the Billboard 200's No. 1 and 2 positions simultaneously.

'ROCK' ERA: The Billboard Hot 100 likewise sports a new No. 1, as LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem," featuring Lauren Bennett and GoonRock, rises 2-1.

LMFAO Brings the 'Party' to Top of Hot 100
The song is just the 11th of the chart's 1,005 leaders to feature the word 'rock' in its title:

"Crocodile Rock," Elton John, 1973
"Rock the Boat," the Hues Corporation, 1974
"Rock Your Baby," George McCrae, 1974
"Rock Me Gently," Andy Kim, 1974
"Rock'n' Me," Steve Miller, 1976
"Rock With You," Michael Jackson, 1980
"It's Still Rock and Roll to Me," Billy Joel, 1980
"I Love Rock & Roll," Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, 1982
"Rock Me Amadeus," Falco, 1986
"Rock On," Michael Damian, 1989
"Party Rock Anthem," Lauren Bennett and GoonRock, 2011

(Jett didn't specify whether she liked rock and roll equally or one more than the other, but among Hot 100 leaders, "rock" has been more prevalent than "roll." Here are the select six songs that have "roll"-ed to No. 1 (two of which also "rock"-ed): "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone," the Temptations, 1972; "Love Rollercoaster," Ohio Players, 1976; "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me"; "I Love Rock & Roll"; "Roll With It," Steve Winwood, 1988; and, "Rolling in the Deep," Adele, 2011).

THE 'PARTY' DON'T STOP: While "Party Rock Anthem" is the 10th song to "rock" the Hot 100's summit, it's just the second No. 1 with the word "party" in its title.

It had been 48 years, one month and one week since the last such celebration: Lesley Gore declared (not so joyously) "It's My Party" the weeks of June 1 and 8, 1963.

In between, three other "party" songs peaked at No. 2: Eddie Murphy's "Party All the Time" (1985), Shop Boyz' "Party Like a Rockstar" (2007) and Miley Cyrus' "Party in the U.S.A." (2009).

(LMFAO's maiden leader is the Hot 100's first No. 1 with "anthem" in its name).

As "Party Rock Anthem" replaces Pitbull's "Give Me Everything," featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer, songs credited to four artists reign back-to-back for the first time in the Hot 100's history.

"Party" and "Give" are the first leaders by a quartet of acts since Nelly's "Grillz," featuring Paul Wall, Ali and Gipp, led for two weeks in January 2006.

LMFAO is also the eighth group whose name consists solely of an acronym to rule the Hot 100. Here are all such acts (act-ronyms?):

Artist, Title, Year
MFSB, "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)," 1974
AWB, "Pick Up the Pieces," 1975
ABBA, "Dancing Queen," 1976
EMF, "Unbelievable," 1991
SWV, "Weak," 1993
TLC, "Creep," "Waterfalls," 1995; "No Scrubs," "Unpretty," 1999
D4L, "Laffy Taffy," 2006
LMFAO, "Party Rock Anthem," 2011

LMFAO is additionally the first act to top the Hot 100 whose name represents internet slang. One such song has reigned: Usher's "OMG," featuring will.i.am.

Song Lyrics: Katy Perry: E.T.

 Song Lyrics: Katy Perry: E.T.

You're so hypnotizing
Could you be the devil? Could you be an angel?
Your touch magnetizing
Feels like I am floating, leaves my body glowing

They say be afraid
You're not like the others, futuristic lover
Different DNA
They don't understand you

You're from a whole other world
A different dimension
You open my eyes
And I'm ready to go, lead me into the light

Kiss me, ki-ki-kiss me
Infect me with your love and
Fill me with your poison

Take me, ta-ta-take me
Wanna be a victim
Ready for abduction

Boy, you're an alien
Your touch so foreign
It's supernatural
Extraterrestrial

You're so supersonic
Wanna feel your powers, stun me with your lasers
Your kiss is cosmic
Every move is magic

You're from a whole other world
A different dimension
You open my eyes
And I'm ready to go, lead me into the light

Kiss me, ki-ki-kiss me
Infect me with your love and
Fill me with your poison

Take me, ta-ta-take me
Wanna be a victim
Ready for abduction

Boy, you're an alien
Your touch so foreign
It's supernatural
Extraterrestrial

This is transcendental
On another level
Boy, you're my lucky star

I wanna walk on your wavelength
And be there when you vibrate
For you I'll risk it all

Kiss me, ki-ki-kiss me
Infect me with your love and
Fill me with your poison

Take me, ta-ta-take me
Wanna be a victim
Ready for abduction

Boy, you're an alien
Your touch so foreign
It's supernatural
Extraterrestrial, extraterrestrial, extraterrestrial

Boy, you're an alien
Your touch so foreign
It's supernatural
Extraterrestrial

Hot News: Katy Perry postpones gigs after attack of food poisoning

Pop star Katy Perry has been forced to postpone two dates on her California Dreams tour after suffering from food poisoning. The 26-year-old has apologised to fans for cancelling shows in Chicago, Illinois, today and in St Paul, Minnesota, tomorrow.

Both gigs have been re-scheduled for August. The Teenage Dream hitmaker reportedly had to pull the concerts because of 'an attack of food poisoning leading to severe dehydration', according to Jam Productions.

She tweeted today: "Chicago and St Paul - I'm so sorry to have to postpone today and tomorrow's shows. But I'll be back 8/21 (Chi) and 8/23 (St Paul)!" In a message on her official website, Perry added: "I apologise to my fans in Chicago and the Twin Cities for not being able to perform this weekend, but I am going to return in a few weeks to give them the very best show ever!"

Song lyric: Katy Perry - I Kissed A Girl Song lyrics

Katy Perry - I Kissed A Girl

This was never the way I planned
Not, my intention
I got so brave, drink in hand
Lost, my discretion
It's not what,
I'm used to
Just
Want to try you on
I'm curious, for you
Caught my attention

I kissed a girl
And I liked it
The taste of her cherry chapstick
I kissed a girl
Just to try it
I hope my boyfriend don't mind it
It felt so wrong
It felt so right
Don't mean I'm in love tonight
I kissed a girl
And I liked it
I liked it

No I don't even know your name
It doesn't matter
Your my experimental game
Just human nature
It's not what
Good girls do
Not how they should behave
My head is so confused
Hard to obey

I kissed a girl
And I liked it
The taste of her cherry chapstick
I kissed a girl
Just to try it
I hope my boyfriend don't mind it
It felt so wrong
It felt so right
Don't mean I'm in love tonight
I kissed a girl
And I liked it
I liked it

Us girls we are so magical
Soft skin red lips
So kissable
Hard to resist
So touchable
To good to deny it
Ain't no big deal
It's innocence

I kissed a girl
And I liked it
The taste of her cherry chapstick
I kissed a girl
Just to try it
I hope my boyfriend don;t mind it
It felt so wrong
It felt so right
Don't mean I'm in love tonight
I kissed a girl
And I liked it
I liked it

Lady Gaga is hooked on 'Antiques Roadshow'

The 25-year-old singer ' who is well known for her eccentric tastes ' is obsessed with the British TV show where people bring in their valuables to find out their value, and friends have now bought her a DVD box set of classic episodes so she can watch them on the road.

A source told The Sun newspaper: "Lady Gaga is really into her antiques so British pals thought she might be interested in the programme.

"It went down a storm and Gaga hasn't stopped watching the DVDs. She loves how the old people think their antique is a bit of old tat but ends up costing thousands. It's right up her street."

The 'Judas' hitmaker herself has some expensive items in her closet ' she was given the red shoes worn by Judy Garland in 1939 movie 'The Wizard of Oz' as a present from her management earlier this year.

It is not the first time Lady Gaga has been linked to a love of television ' she has previously confessed she adores watching cookery shows when she has some down time.

She said: "When I get time off, I like to watch cooking shows, I'm really obsessed with them. I'm a really good cook now, just from watching those shows. My specialty is Italian."

Soundgarden reunion tour relives band's '90s glory

TORONTO (Reuters) - More than 14 years after Soundgarden broke up, the Seattle rockers launched their reunion tour in Toronto on Saturday, taking 16,000 nostalgic fans back to the glory days of the 1990s grunge era.

The foursome raced through 21 songs in two hours at the Molson Amphitheatre, focusing mostly on the riff-laden dark material that transformed them into MTV darlings.

In contrast to the tense final show of their last tour in 1997, the scene on stage seemed particularly more relaxed.

Singer/guitarist Chris Cornell shot some video footage of the audience, and his young son could be seen in the wings playing air drums and singing along. His traditionally stone-faced colleagues allowed themselves the occasional smile, but they rarely acknowledged each other.

Toronto was the first stop of a 20-date tour that wraps July 30 in Washington state; the band is also slated to headline a festival in New Orleans on October 28.

Beyond that, the band must take second-place to drummer Matt Cameron's commitments to Pearl Jam, which is touring Canada throughout September. Cornell will spend most of October on a solo tour of New Zealand and Australia.

Soundgarden is also working on a follow-up to its last studio album, 1996's "Down on the Upside," which is tentatively set to come out early next year. Cornell said there was no room in the set list to premiere any songs.

CULT FAVORITES TO MTV
Soundgarden emerged in the 1980s from a fertile Seattle music scene that also produced such grunge bands as Nirvana, Alice in Chains and the future members of Pearl Jam. The band was often likened to Led Zeppelin early in its career, winning cult approval from punk and heavy metal enthusiasts.

It crossed over into the mainstream with its chart-topping 1994 album "Superunknown," an MTV-friendly set that yielded two Grammys. Nine of the album's 15 tracks were played in Toronto, including the hits "Black Hole Sun" and "Fell on Black Days."

Half of the 12 tunes from that album's predecessor, 1991's "Badmotorfinger," were also dusted off, including the speed-metal track "Rusty Cage" that Johnny Cash later revived in a stripped-down version.

Just two songs were played from "Down on the Upside," an album at the center of a rift about musical direction. Rising tensions led to Soundgarden's break-up after the final stop of its 1997 tour in Hawaii.

Only Cornell and Cameron retained high public profiles in subsequent years. The singer released a few solo albums and formed the "supergroup" Audioslave with members of Rage Against the Machine. Cameron became Pearl Jam's fifth drummer.

But guitarist Kim Thayil told Reuters in May that the foursome managed to remain friends, with the musicians often bumping into each other in Seattle's tight-knit music scene.

The reunion started to come together last year, with the band playing the Lollapalooza festival in August, and a handful of low-profile dates in small venues.

The group, rounded out by bassist Ben Shepherd, is taking the current reunion on a day-to-day basis, given that the members are older, wiser and have domestic commitments.

"The band is definitely handling its career situation in a lot freer way than it did before," Thayil said. "There are other focal points to people's lives individually and those can't be taken away. First things first."

Hot News: Katy Perry cancels concerts after food-poisoning

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap) - When Katy Perry opens her mouth to sing, something beautiful tends to come out. When she opens her mouth to eat? Maybe not so much.

The "Teenage Dream" singer was forced to cancel a pair of concerts for Friday and Saturday after suffering a bout of food poisoning and severe dehydration, according to her official website.

The concerts, which were to occur in Chicago and St. Paul, have been rescheduled for next month. Perry fought through the illness to fire up her Twitter account and announce the new dates on Friday, writing, "Chicago and St. Paul -- I'm so sorry to have to postpone today and tomorrow's shows. But I'll be back 8/21 (CHI) and 8/23 (St. Paul)!"

Perry noted in a statement, "I am going to return in a few weeks to give them the very best show ever!"
Perry's next concert is scheduled for Regina, Saskatchewan, on Wednesday.

Metallica: Secret Recording Project?

A few months ago our own Kirk Hammett hinted at a new Metallica project that's "not really 100 percent a Metallica record."   While Kirk may have jumped the gun a little (and has since been properly punished with a series of push-ups!), we are more than proud to announce that we have just completed recording a full length album that is a collaboration with none other than the legendary Lou Reed.

Ever since we had the pleasure of performing with Lou at the 25th Anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at Madison Square Garden in October of 2009, we have been kicking around the idea of making a record together.  Some of you astute Bay Area residents may have picked up news of recent Lou Reed sightings in the greater San Francisco area and we have indeed been working at our home studio at HQ on and off over the last few months.  In what would be lightning speed for a Metallica related project, we recorded ten songs during this time and while at this moment we're not exactly sure when you'll hear it, we're beyond excited to share with you that the recording sessions wrapped up last week.

A true innovator and easily one of the most influential songwriters, musicians, and performers in rock music history, Lou's work with the Velvet Underground and as a solo artist has such an enduring quality that he has long been revered and respected by us and many of our peers.  We can't wait for you to listen to the finished record, so as we like to hear ourselves say around here, keep watching this spot for updates . . . we'll be back with more details as they come together.
