Gods of the North!

From Star-Studded Comics #14 (1968), comes this old-school adaptation of Robert E. Howard's "Gods of the North"!

Well...sorta.

This particular comic is actually here by way of the Spanish fanzine Sword (link), which cites Fandom's Finest Comics (Hamster Press, 1998) as the source. The Hamster Press version is indeed a reprint from the Texan fanzine Star-Studded Comics. Adapted by Larry Herndon, penciled by Steven Kelez, and inked by Alan Hutchinson!

Star-Studded Comics #14 (left), Fandom's Finest Comics Volume 2 (right)

So the translation has come full circle (English, Spanish, English), and has probably taken a bit of a beating along the way, but it will NOT disappoint!

Download it right HERE, you venomous serpent of Set!

May Mitra grant all that you desire, Joseba, including an Atali with a friendly disposition!

Conan in the Czech Republic and Slovakia! Part 6!

To wrap things up with Poutník, I thought I should revisit a couple of books (magazines?) that I made mention of in a previous post.  I had no idea at that time that they were part of a run of seven issues starting in 1991, which include more artwork from the likes of Czech artists Kája Saudek and Teodor Rotrekl, and all featuring stories by Robert E. Howard!

Issues 1-2

Issues 3-4

Issues 5-7
Also came across this, which I'm guessing is a compilation of these 7 "rare" issues...

And just for fun, here's a look at what I believe to be the long running Poutník fanzine, which (based on their apparent love of all things REH and Conan) surely holds a place in Conan fandom!  And yet another Kája Saudek cover!

The future looks bright for Poutník and their publishing of Conan novels, with no sign of slowing down in 2010.  Three new titles are planned (and quite possibly already released), namely “Conan – Bélitin tanec smrti” (Conan - Belit’s Dance of Death?) by Czech author Václav Vágenknecht, along with the Czech translations of Andrew J. Offut’s Conan the Mercenary (Conan – žoldnéř), and Robert Jordan’s Conan the Victorious (Conan vítězný)…

Berserker Week on Ablogcalypse!

Our good friend Kaiser has just wrapped up Berserker week over on Ablogcalypse (here)…what does this have to do with Conan you might ask? Well there’s little doubt that the rough and disorderly Cimmerian was one and the same.

A few examples, from the almighty Robert E. Howard:

“He broke savagely through the brush in the direction of the sound, whistling shrilly as he ran, his fear drowned in berserk rage.” – The Hour of the Dragon

“He snarled silently, the red rage growing in his eyes – the berserk fury of a hunted beast which is ready to turn at bay.” – The Black Stranger

“In his berserk fury he did not miss; the air was filled with feathered destruction.” – Queen of the Black Coast

So I suggest that you head on over to Crowbar's blog for some raging good fun!

Hell, I even learned a thing or two, and my interest in Slaine has definitely been reignited!

Happy Birthday to Robert E. Howard

Yesterday, January 22nd marked Robert E. Howard's birthday and I feel a little bad for mentioning this a day late, but I'm a busy guy. Anyway, a very heart-felt Happy Birthday to the great pulp writer and creator of my favorite hero, Conan the Barbarian! Just think, he'd be 103 years old today if he hadn't committed suicide that fateful day in 1936. A great writer and an even greater loss. I can't help but wonder what other great stories he would have written about Conan, Kull, Cormac and Solomon Kane if he had lived long enough to further his career. I wonder how different Conan would be now? Just something to think about.
