We Know EVIL DEAD 4 Is Coming ... Why? Because Bruce Says So!

Written By: Ken Hulsey

Source: Collider / Bruce Campbell

Talk about news coming straight from the horses mouth!

Rumors of an "Evil Dead" remake/sequel have been around for some time but now according to Bruce Campbell the film is actually going into production.

This is what Bruce had to say via Twitter, “Believe in the remake, dawg! The project is real. In the works. Cool as hell. Scary as hell.”

At this point it is not known if Campbell will indeed reprise his role as Ash in the film or even if Sam Raimi will be involved.

Early rumors had Campbell working behind the camera with Raimi sitting in as a producer.

An "Evil Dead" without Bruce Campbell as the star ..... count me out. He owns that role dawg!

Johnny Depp To Step Into McGavin's Shoes As THE NIGHT STALKER

Written By: Ken Hulsey

Source: Empire

The news out of Hollywood today is that Johnny Depp has teamed up with Disney to secure the movie rights to the 1970s cult television series "The Night Stalker." Depp's production company Infinitum Nihil is already in place to begin pre-production work alongside the folks at Buena Vista.

Depp will be taking over the role of Carl Kolchak, which was originally played by the late Darren McGavin, a pesky newspaper reporter who had a knack for stumbling on stories involving monsters, aliens and other paranormal activity.

It has been noted that "The Night Stalker" was one of Chris Carter's major influences in developing "The X-Files".

No word on a director or cast for "The Night Stalker."

The First Photos From DRACULA 3D

Written By: Ken Hulsey

Source: Total Film

Classic movie monsters are all the rage these days with studios climbing all over themselves trying to make a new "Frankenstein" movie, Universal trying to get "The Wolfman" right, Legendary pictures making a new 3D "Godzilla" movie, a "Creature From the Black Lagoon" remake about to get under way, and enough Bigfoot movies to beat the band.

In prior articles I have talked about film maker James Baack's homage to Hammer horror films "Dracula's Orgy of the Damned" which of course features yet another classic movie monster Dracula. Now it seems that Baack is not alone in his quest to revisit the feel of 60s and 70s UK horror. Director Dario Argento is also well into production on "Dracula 3D" which from the looks of it has Hammer written all over it.

The film stars Rutger Hauer as Van Helsing and Argento's daughter Asia as Lucy.

It's normally a bad sign when a film maker casts his own family members in his films so watch out.

Here is the plot:

TRANSYLVANIA, 1893.

One night in the woods adjacent to Passo Borgo, at the foot of the Carpazi mountains, a couple of young lovers, Tania and Milos, secretly meet. On her way home, Tania is chased and overcome by a "dark shadow" that kills her. In those days Jonathan Harker, a young librarian, arrives at the village hired by Count Dracula, a nobleman from the area. Tania's body mysteriously disappears from the cemetery. In the meantime Harker, before going to Count Dracula's castle, takes the opportunity to visit Lucy Kisslinger, his wife Mina's best friend as well as the daughter of the local mayor.

Upon arriving at the castle, Harker is greeted by Tania, brought back to life from the dead and made vampire, who tries from the very beginning to seduce him; however they are interrupted by Dracula's entrance welcoming Harker. The following night Tania tries again to bite Harker, she is close to his neck when she is stopped by the count who gets the upper hand and it is he himself who bites Harker's neck, however allowing him to live. The following day, weakened but still conscious Harker attempts to escape, but as soon as he is outside the castle a large wolf with a white lock assaults and savagely kills him. Meanwhile, Mina, Harker's wife, arrives in the village and is guest for a few days at the home of her dearest friend Lucy Kisslinger, who will also be bitten and vampirized. The day after, Mina, worried about her husband, goes to Count Dracula's castle. Their encounter makes her forget the reason for her presence there. She is completely under the count's influence; the count had orchestrated the events leading up to their encounter; in fact Mina looks exactly like his beloved Dolinger, who died some centuries ago. Upon her return to the Kisslinger house, Mina learns of the death of her dear friend Lucy. The sequence of such strange and dramatic events summons the aid of Van Helsing, vampire expert of the techniques used to eliminate them. Van Helsing, aware of the circumstances decides to act swiftly and prepares the tools needed to combat vampires. He directs himself to the center of evil, Count Dracula's castle. Meanwhile Dracula, in the village, kills the inhabitants who rescinded their pact, while Van Helsing, inside the castle, is able to definitively eliminate Tania. Dracula, intent on his desire to reunite with his beloved wife, leads Mina, completely hypnotized, to the castle where Van Helsing is waiting. He has decided to engage in a deadly fight with his evil foe. During the struggle Van Helsing loses his gun with the silver bullet and Mina, still under Dracula's spell, gathers it and tries to aid Dracula, but she misses the target and involuntarily kills him. The special silver bullet transforms Dracula into ashes; but his spirit lifts the ashes into the air and uniting, they shape into a large bat with a mocking grin...

Fox Jumps Into The FRANKENSTEIN Derby By Hiring Landis

Written By: Ken Hulsey

Source: Variety

The Monster (Frankenstein to all you laymen) is certainly a very popular fellow in Hollywood these days with at least a half dozen films based on the monster in some form of production.

Not wanting to be left out of this new "Frankenstein Derby" Fox has jumped into the mix, and possibly the lead, by hiring Max Landis (Chronicle) to write their screenplay. Fox is also actively searching for a director for "Frankenstein" with the names Ron Howard, Paul Greengrass and David Yates ("Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix") being mentioned as candidates.

As we reported earlier Universal is planning their own remake of the 1931 classic "Frankenstein" with Guillermo del Toro and Scott Stube at the helm. That film however does not have a script in the works.

Other "Frankenstein" projects out there include "I, Frankenstein" at Lakeshore Entertainment, "This Dark Endeavor: The Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein" at Summit Entertainment and "The Casebook of Victor Frankenstein" from Ghost House Pictures and RT Features. There are also a ton of independent "Frankenstein" flicks in the works as well including "Monster Brawl" (Frankenstein fights the Wolfman, Dracula and Zombies), "Frankenstein 2011" and "Frankenstein Rising".

It's good to be The Monster!

Bryan Singer Begins Production On 3D Remake Of JACK THE GIANT KILLER

Source: Warner Bros

Principal photography is underway in London on acclaimed filmmaker Bryan Singer's 3D epic action adventure "Jack the Giant Killer," with Nicholas Hoult in the title role of Jack, for New Line Cinema and Legendary Pictures.

"Jack the Giant Killer" tells the story of an ancient war that is reignited when a young farmhand unwittingly opens a gateway between our world and a fearsome race of giants. Unleashed on the Earth for the first time in centuries, the giants strive to reclaim the land they once lost, forcing the young man, Jack, into the battle of his life to stop them. Fighting for a kingdom, its people, and the love of a brave princess, he comes face to face with the unstoppable warriors he thought only existed in legend—and gets the chance to become a legend himself.

Hoult and Singer recently collaborated on the Singer-produced "X-Men: First Class," for release later this year. "Jack the Giant Killer" also stars Eleanor Tomlinson as Princess Isabelle; Stanley Tucci ("Captain America: The First Avenger," "Julie & Julia") as the deceitful Lord Roderick; Ian McShane ("Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," HBO's "Deadwood") as the besieged King Brahmwell; Bill Nighy ("Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows") as the giants' leader General Fallon; and Ewan McGregor ("Star Wars," "The Ghost Writer") as palace guard Elmont.

Singer will direct from a screenplay by Darren Lemke and Christopher McQuarrie and Dan Studney, story by Darren Lemke & David Dobkin. The film will be produced by Neal Moritz, David Dobkin, Bryan Singer and Patrick McCormick.

The creative filmmaking team includes Singer's longtime collaborators, director of photography Newton Thomas Sigel ("X-Men," "Superman Returns") and editor John Ottman ("X2," "Superman Returns"). The production designer is Gavin Bocquet ("Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith").

"Jack the Giant Killer" is filming on location in and around London, and is scheduled for a summer 2012 release.

A New Line Cinema presentation, in association with Legendary Pictures, the film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Filming Begins On Tim Burton's Dark Shadows

Source: Warner Bros

Filming begins this week on Warner Bros. Pictures' and Village Roadshow Pictures' "Dark Shadows," which brings the cult classic television series to the big screen under the direction of Tim Burton. The film's all-star ensemble cast includes Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, Bella Heathcote, Chloe Moretz, and newcomer Gulliver McGrath.

In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet—or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy...until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive.

Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles.

Also residing in the manor is Elizabeth's ne'er-do-well brother, Roger Collins, (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz); and Roger's precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). The mystery extends beyond the family, to caretaker Willie Loomis, played by Jackie Earle Haley, and David's new nanny, Victoria Winters, played by Bella Heathcote.

Burton is directing and producing "Dark Shadows" from a screenplay by Seth Grahame-Smith, story by John August and Grahame-Smith, based on the television series created by Dan Curtis. Also producing are Oscar® winner Richard D. Zanuck ("Alice in Wonderland," "Driving Miss Daisy"), continuing his long association with Burton; Oscar® winner Graham King, ("Rango," "The Departed"), continuing his collaboration with Depp; Johnny Depp, Christi Dembrowski, and David Kennedy. The executive producers are Chris Lebenzon, Nigel Gostelow, Tim Headington, and Bruce Berman.

The behind-the-scenes creative team includes cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel, Oscar(R)-winning production designer Rick Heinrichs ("Sleepy Hollow"), Oscar(R)-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood ("Alice in Wonderland") and editor Chris Lebenzon ("Alice in Wonderland"). The score will be composed by Danny Elfman.

"Dark Shadows" is being filmed entirely in England, both at Pinewood Studios and on location.

"Dark Shadows" will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.

Mr. Lobo Hams It Up On The Set Of PLAN 9

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Photos By: Dixie Dellamorto

I ask you, what could be scarier than a horror host with an axe?

Well ..... probably a lot of things, but America's number one horror host took full advantage of some free tine on the set of "Plan 9" to ham it up in front of the camera.

What? ...... no not Elvira? Why would you think this was about her?

No, I'm talking about Mr. Lobo from the nationally televised late-night horror movie showcase "Cinema Insomnia", who plays a major role in the remake of the Ed Wood classic (?) "Plan 9 From Outer Space".

Yes, as I mentioned last week, John Johnson of Darkstone Entertainment is knee-deep in working on the film which also stars Brian Krause, Matthew Ewald, James Rolfe, Caitlin Hill, Matt Sloan & Aaron Yonda.

As for Lobo, well he has landed the coveted role of The Amazing Criswell. Who is Criswell you may ask? Well he was a well-known psychic from the 1950s who was featured in the intro to the original "Plan 9". This time around Lobo's Criswell will do more than just introduce the film, as these photos illustrate, he will be one mean, bad-ass, zombie-killing machine.

Step aside Shaun, move to the rear Ash, Lobo's in town!

Elvira .... pfft, what does she have that Lobo doesn't? Besides those! Hmm some people prefer substance over gazongas ..... well some.

Here are the pics from the set:

New Trailer & Images From RISE OF THE APES Lack Charm Of Original

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: Rise of the Planet of the Apes / Facebook

Weta Digital has just released several concept images from "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" (I liked 'Rise of the Apes' better) via the film's official Facebook page. Though the images are pretty cool I can't help thinking that the film lacks the basic charm of the original film series. Granted, the apes .... well look like 'real' apes, it was the human-like qualities of using actors in ape make-up that allowed audiences back in the 60s and 70s to identify with with them. I wonder how much modern audiences will embrace these apes?

For me ..... I'm just not feeling it right now.

Some of these new concept photos look really cool, apes attacking soldiers in downtown San Francisco, apes scaling the Golden Gate bridge and apes with spears on top of a building. The others kinda look rather comical, apes jumping on cars like they used to do at Lion Country Safari and apes scaring shoppers at the mall.

A mixed bag in my mind.

It, of course, is way too early to pass any kind of judgement on this one. Part of me wants to like it, the other wants to ignore it and watch Taylor, Cornelius and Zira on DVD.

Check these out and formulate your own opinion:

Three New Images From FRIGHT NIGHT

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: Walt Disney Studios / Dreamworks

Disney has just released three brand new pics from their remake of "Fright Night" which is due out this summer. Unfortunately none of these feature every ones favorite Doctor, David Tennant as Vincent. I know that will make a few of you, and you know who you are, rather miffed.

Regardless, they do feature Colin Farrell and Anton Yelchin which will make others very happy indeed.

Here's the synopsis from the Mouse Factory:

Senior Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin) finally has it all going on: he’s running with the popular crowd and dating the most coveted girl in his high school. In fact, he’s so cool he’s even dissing his best friend. But trouble arrives when Jerry (Colin Farrell) moves in next door. He seems like a great guy at first, but there’s something not quite right—but everyone, including Charlie’s mom (Toni Collette), doesn’t notice. After observing some very strange activity, Charlie comes to an unmistakable conclusion: Jerry is a vampire preying on the neighborhood. Unable to convince anyone, Charlie has to find a way to get rid of the monster himself in this Craig Gillespie-helmed revamp of the comedy-horror classic.

Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin) is a high school senior who’s on top of the world—that is until Jerry (Colin Farrell) moves in next door and Charlie discovers that he is a vampire preying on the neighborhood.

And here are the photos with descriptions and legal stuff:

The First Image Of Caesar From RISE OF THE APES

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: Obsessed With Film

When 20th Century Fox first announced way back in 2008 that they were planning to reboot the "Planet of the Apes" movie franchise using modern computer generated effects many in the fan community spoke out in objection. How would CGI Apes stand up against the legendary makeup effects created by John Chambers for the original films?

Well today we have our first glimpse of what the main character, Caesar, in "Rise of the Apes" will look like.

Fox revealed many images from their upcoming releases at the Las Vegas’ CinemaCon including the above image, albeit only the nose and eyes, of Andy Serkis as the genetically altered ape who will bring about the fall of mankind.

The apes in "Rise" are being digitally created by Weta Studios with hair effects by Columbia University’s Eitan Grinspun, who created brand-new state of the art animation software for the Disney animated feature "Tangled".

The look of the character has some flair of Chambers work ..... but then again ..... not really.

I guess the jury will be out until we get a good look at the whole design.

Pity, I really loved the look actual actors in ape make-up.

Ryan Gosling To Play Logan 5

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: Variety
Artwork By: Lauras Muse

Variety is reporting that the Ryan Gosling (The Notebook, Fracture) is in negotiations to step into the shoes of fellow British thespian Michael York to play Logan 5 in the upcoming "Logan's Run" remake.

Reportedly Warner Bros is also in negotiations with Nicolas Winding Refn to direct the film which has been various stages of development for over a decade. Refn would join a long list of film makers that have been attached to "Logan's Run" throughout the years, a list that also includes Carl Erik Rinsch and Bryan Singer.

Producers Joel Silver, Andrew Rona, Akiva Goldsman and Kerry Foster have already been in place for some time.

Last year Silver revealed that "Logan's Run" was going to be produced in 3D, which should come as no surprise to anyone due to the fact that just about all upcoming fantasy film projects are slated to be produced in that format.

Logan's Run Plot:

In the distant future the survivors of the apocalypse live in a giant domed city where their every need is taken care of by overlord computer. People live in world of pleasure, but there is one catch. At the age of 30 (21 in Johnson and Nolan's novel) all citizens are required to report for a ritualistic murder ceremony known as "Carousel". The populace has been fooled into believing that this ceremony leads to reincarnation and a new life though its real purpose is population control. To insure that citizens don't "chicken out" on their way to Carousel there is a police force in place known as "Sandman" who terminate those who attempt to run.

Logan 5 is one of the elite Sandmen. During one of his routine terminations he retrieves an anch, a symbol for a mythical place called Sanctuary where runners can find refuge, off the body of a would be runner. Upon placing the item into the computers scanner he is instructed to undergo a process to alter his "Life Clock", a symbol of a persons age embedded in the palm, to the blinking red of a person on last day so that he may pose as a runner to infiltrate Sanctuary. During the process he learns that 1036 runners had managed to escape the city and that Carousel is a ruse.

Along with his companion, Jessica 6, Logan attempts to flee the domed city in search of Sanctuary.

Let's see if Logan really gets running this time.

Also, with the production gearing up, a film competition is being unleashed!

The web site will become an archive that filmmakers and fans can raid for all that they can carry! He feels that the material doesn’t belong to him, but to all. “This is the best way to see Ed’s vision live on.” – John Johnson

We have also started a Plan 9 Web Series Entitled "Criswell Predicts" based on the old Criswell Predictions from the 50's! It also ties directly into the film in ways that can can't explain now... But... Soon will be revealed... To see the Criswell Predicts playlist on youtube click here!

KINGDOM OF THE SPIDERS Being Remade In 3D

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Sources: Screen Daily / Avery Guerra

Remakes and 3D films are all the rage these days, so is it any surprise that Stealth Media Group has hired Nuala Barton and Rene Sheridan to produce a modern, 3D, version of the 1977 cult film "Kingdom of the Spiders", which originally starred "Star Trek" alumni William Shatner?

Of course not.

If you recall, the original "Kingdom of the Spiders" was about a small Arizona town (Sedona) that was overrun by thousands of hungry tarantulas.

This time around, however, and if the promo poster to the right is any indication, it looks like a major city is set to face an epic infestation of arachnids this time, and not by only tarantulas, but all kinds of creepy crawlers.

The two producers made this rather benign comment about their upcoming film, “We are delighted to be working with Stealth Media’s Jason Piette, Sean O’Kelly and Michael Cowan to bring this cult classic back to larger than life, in 3D.”

Not much to go on there.

Look for more information on "Kingdom of the Spiders 3D" to crawl out from under the furniture soon.

George Lucas Moving Forward With STAR WARS 3D Films

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: WENN

George Lucas just can't leave his six "Star Wars" movies alone. Back in mid 1990s he got the bright idea of revamping his original trilogy with new state-of-the-art computer-generated effects to celebrate the 20th anniversary of "A New Hope" (Star Wars). As if the effects in any of those films needed to be replaced? And, of course, he made Greedo shoot first, which still keeps me up at night.

Now, Lucas wants to fiddle with his beloved films once again, turning them all into 3D movies.

This new conversion of these beloved films into the medium of the moment, 3D, has been rumored for some time, but now Lucas and his buddies at Lucasfilm are moving forward.

The first film to get the 3D treatment, "The Phantom Menace", which may actually be improved by a revamp. Maybe the film maker will remove some of Jar Jar's scenes, and replace all of Jake Lloyd's lines? ...... but ......... that's probably just wishful thinking.

If everything goes as planned, "Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace 3D" will be ready to join the log-jam of sci fi and fantasy films slated for release in 2012.

Effects supervisor John Knoll, who is in charge of the 3D revamp, says, "Getting good results on a stereo conversion is a matter of taking the time and getting it right. It takes a critical and artistic eye along with an incredible attention to detail to be successful. It is not something that you can rush if you want to expect good results.

"For Star Wars we will take our time, applying everything we know both aesthetically and technically to bring audiences a fantastic new Star Wars experience."

What everyone at Lucasfilm, and Lucas himself, fail to realize, is that "Star Wars" fans really like the 'old' experience, before he started messing with the films over a decade ago.

I do have to admit, however, that I have always felt that "Return of the Jedi" would have made a great 3D film, with the speeder bikes racing through the woods of Endor and the mass of Tie Fighters coming out of the screen at ya.

I'll just have to reserve some of my comments til after these are finished. This could still be a good thing.

"Star Wars" fans should note that this probably won't be the last time the these films get reworked in some form or another. Lucas has often said that "movies are never finished, just often abandoned."
