New Footage from The Adventures of Conan Live Show!

Fellow blogger, CROM! reader, and occasional contributer Kaiser Crowbar was kind enough to point us in the direction of more footage from the Univeral Studios Adventures of Conan Live Show, that was upped to YouTube recently.  Check it out!

On a related note, when Reis was on vacation a while back, he came across some swords (here) and was suspicious that they may have been from the Conan live show.  Richie Brose (who played the part of Conan in that show) was kind enough to comment on that post and confirm that those swords were indeed from the show, and also that they were Red Sonja swords.

We don't really get a good look at Sonja's sword in the video to verify this, but we do get a pretty good look at the sword that Richie is holding, and it looks a lot like the ones photographed by Reis (as shown side by side in the pic below).  They are basically the same design, but the blade of Richie's sword looks longer, so I have little doubt that Richie knows what he's talking about!

If you wanting to learn more about the Conan live show, look no further than this post from Reis back in '08 (here).

Thanks for this Kaiser!   Oh, don't forget to stop by Kaiser's regular stomping grounds (here) and (there) and say hi!

Conan Red Nails Teasers!

These short videos courtesy of Ron Smorynski (a.k.a. WorldOfGrim), who was apparently "the lead animator on the notorious "Conan Red Nails" project (whose story is not yet finished, fingers crossed)"...

And now for the bad (but not suprising) news...Ron also had this to say: "Sadly, the animated film has been put on indefinite hold."

Thanks to Terry Allen (UK) for the heads up!

*** UPDATE ***

Oops, I missed this one, which has some Red Nails battle sequences at the beginning.  I hope that blunder doesn't result in a dock in pay!

New Conan Movie Has New Director!

Photobucket

The stomach turning nightmare that Brett Ratner was slated to direct the next Conan movie is over! Thank Crom! Chud.com broke the news of the Conan project getting a new director, none other than V for Vendetta helmsman, James McTeigue.

This is what Chud had to say...

Yesterday we learned that Brett Ratner looked to be out of the director's chair on the new Conan movie, which possibly shoots this summer. The producers have been wasting no time in trying to get a new helmer for the franchise reboot, which after months of development still needs some script work and a leading actor. And according to my very trustworthy, very much correct in the past source, they've found their director:

James McTeigue.

The director of the first good Alan Moore adaptation (V For Vendetta) and the upcoming Ninja Assassin, McTeigue was long the Wachowski's first AD. There's no question that McTeigue has the action chops needed to bring the Hyborian barbarian's adventures to brutal, bloody life.

But will he have the money needed to do it right? My source fears that the loss of Ratner means a loss of budget. Ninja Assassin seems to be budgeted at around 50 million, and V For Vendetta was 54 million. Both look terrific - McTeigue is getting every penny on screen - but Conan will be much costlier, effects-wise. Will the current rumored 120 million dollar budget be slashed with this new director?

It's important to note that McTeigue hasn't signed any papers yet, so this deal is still in the making, but it looks like he's the guy Nu-Image/Millenium wants for the job.

And remember, the Wachowskis were once set to direct a Conan movie. They and McTeigue retain a tight relationship; might this Conan have their fingerprints all over it as much as McTeigues? That, to me, sounds like it could be a damn good thing.

And if you don't believe me, you can read it HERE.

Onion Article: Obama Disappointed Cabinet Failed To Understand His Reference To 'Savage Sword Of Conan' #24

Thanks to a regular CROM! reader named Jay for sending along this hilarious Onion article discussing President Obama's dismay at people not getting his Conan references. You all may remember from an earlier post about Obama's collection of Conan comic books. Well, it looks like the folks at the Onion took that bit of info and ran with it.

Here's one of my favorite excerpts from the article...

"If my inner circle of advisers can't even communicate about the most basic issues, how are we going to tackle the massive problems our nation faces?" Obama said during a press conference. "When I tell my cabinet that getting bipartisan support is exactly like the time Conan got Taurus to help him steal Yara's jewel, they need to understand what I mean."

After receiving no reaction from the assembled reporters, Obama added, "Because a giant spider is protecting this chamber full of precious jewels, just like Congress is protecting its…. God, how are you people not seeing this?"

Hahaha!!! Good stuff!

Anyway, you can read the full article HERE. Enjoy! Thanks again, Jay!

Conan's Sword-maker Passes Away...

I just learned that master sword-maker, Jody Samson, passed away in his studio on Dec. 27th 2008.

Photobucket

Many of you may not know Jody Samson by name but I guarantee you have seen his work...

Photobucket

Samson was the designer and maker of Conan's sword (and Conan's father's sword) in the original Conan the Barbarian movie. Not many people this day and age can call themselves a master swordsmith, and now the world is missing one more. But we thank him for the great contribution he made to the Conan mythos.
