CONAN sketch card - By Mike Hawthorne.

Back in April Mike Hawthorne the fella who currently draws CONAN over at Dark Horse comics played a cool little April fools prank on his adoring fans. He got me pretty good as I got my hopes up nice and high for a CONAN/HELLBOY crossover. Well...He revealed it was only a prank after he had at least 20 replies to his post. SHITE!!! Ok well being the cool dude he is Mr. Hawthorne offered up a sketch card to the first 10 people who contacted him by e-mail. Well I checked in. I do not know particularly what number I was but I was one of the lucky few. Here it is ...a cool profile shot of CONAN by Mike Hawthorne. Dig that hatching makes it look all antiquie and what not. Thank you Mike.

Terror On The Black Coast!

Printed as issue one of the second era of the Spanish fanzine Sword (which has been unavailable for some 15 years now) and undoubtedly an incredible find for any Spanish fan of Robert E. Howard as it's so rare that even the artist, Joseba Acebes Acha, has never seen a copy other than the one he owns, it's Terror En La Costa Negra (Terror On The Black Coast), a 48 page Conan adaptation of REH’s “Pigeons from Hell”!!

This REH classic totally gives me the hebejebes every time I read it, so you can imagine my joy (yup, a big s**t eating grin) when I first laid eyes on this particular Conan comic!

If Joseba’s memory serves him correctly, there were but 500 copies printed (a small number using the colored version for the cover), but it was never republished. Terror en La Costa Negra was his last (published) collaboration with Sword, and although Joseba now finds his artwork quite naive (it was, after all, only his eighth or ninth comic), he was still kind enough to share it with us. Joseba candidly explains:

“The second era of Sword began with "Terror en La Costa Negra" that took me over 3 years to finish because by the time I didn't have too much free time and I was determined to do a good job. I think it is better than my previous work and especially the backgrounds, but the characters are still rigid and change their appearance from page to page; and of course I had serious problems drawing tigers and lions (it looks like I didn't know their real size).”

Featuring a script by the one and only Carlos Yáñez García, an introduction by the immensely literate Manuel Barrero (as I quickly discovered while attempting to translate said introduction), and sent to us by none other Joseba himself, it's here for your viewing pleasure, and in English of course!

Download ALL 48 pages of Terror On The Black Coast via Megaupload by clicking  HERE and NOW, you flea-ridden Pict!

Personally, I consider Joseba’s contributions to Conan fandom to be both a hidden treasure and an utter delight, so Mitra’s blessings to you sir, both for sharing with us, as well as for your assistance with the English translation!

Oops, i almost forgot this: a card for the new year,
at the end of Terror On The Black Coast!

One last thing...Joseba's work has evolved greatly since this comic, as witnessed in my previous post, and as you’ll see for yourself soon enough!

Joseba Acebes Acha!

Just before Christmas I was contacted by Spanish artist Jose Manuel Acebes Acha, who had spotted my (not so) recent post about the Spanish Robert E. Howard fanzine Sword!  Being one of the artists involved with Sword, Joseba has taken it upon himself to share some Conan comics, a whole lot of awesome artwork, and related information about Sword with me, so that I can share it with all of you!

It's going to take some time to work through it all and give it the attention it rightly deserves...in the meantime, here's a few teasers, which should explain why I'm beyond excited about it!

Much more to come...Crom salutes you Joseba!

The Art of Michael Maikowsky!

Today I would like to speak a little about an artist named Michael Maikowsky. Michael's art is an homage to a man whose face should be on the COMIC BOOK ART Equivalent of MOUNT RUSHMORE. Just exactly who should be on this monument with him would be tough to determine , Other than KIRBY. But JOHN BUSCEMA is in my estimation the GREATEST comic book artist/illustrator who ever lived. Here in this post you will find some highly skilled and very true renderings of famous illustrations created by John Buscema. Michael Maikowsky's perfect execution of Big John's CONAN , Ka-Zar and THOR kind of inspired me to post this today.

I have seen his work over the last couple of years and not only was I impressed but I was inspired as well. After contacting him Michael allowed me to post some of his works here on "CROM the Ultimate CONAN fan blog."

I would like to share with you...just in a case you may want an expertly crafted recreation OR original in the style of Big John Buscema. You can contact Michael Maikowsky through the info provided. In the copy below...taken from Comic art fans.com you'll find the links to contact Mr. Maikowsky yourself. See below.....

Michael is bringing us comic art fans a gift. Everything he does is inspired by John Buscema, a truly loved man and artist. Although Big John can no longer create new images or recreate old ones, through Michael, Mr. Buscema's magic can still grace the page. Please check out his whole gallery here on CAF (HERE).

If you would like to commission Michael his rates are as follows: 11 by 17 single figure with no background: $150. 11 by 17 recreation or reinterpretation: $300. All prices include shipping.

A note from Michael: "Fellow CAF member Michel Maillot triggered my interest for those John Buscema recreations. Michel saw my tribute portrait of Big John in issue # 21 of TwoMorrows ´Comic Book Artist Magazine´ and asked me for a copy of my drawing which I sent him along with a cover recreation I had finished just for fun. As a result of that, Michel ordered some more recreations in exchange for photocopies of his huge J.B. original art collection (the ´French Collection´, as I use to call it). Inspired by Michel's compliments, I got hooked and developed the nutty idea to recreate every one of Johnny B.´s penciled and inked covers, which I guess was my desperate expression of how much I miss the Big Man and his exceptional artistry. A big thank you goes out to artist supreme Joe Jusko who encouraged, promoted and honored me by presenting some of my artwork in his breathtaking gallery. As you can see, I definitely enjoy reproducing those magic images of John Buscema. It's something I find very inspirational and a valuable learning experience! It taught me more about anatomy, composition, dynamics, lighting, spotting of blacks, etc. than any how-to art book out there. (Btw, my recreations are 11x17 and done on quality two ply bristol board, solely inked with a brush. The title logos are hand lettered. No stats, no whiteout. To prevent confusion and misunderstandings, the artwork is signed with the usual "...after J. Buscema" remark.) Hope I can share some of the love I feel for Big John. I miss him terribly. Nuff said! Best, Michael"

And here is the cut and paste of my correspondance with Mike.

Michael Maikowsky: Hey Michael, wow, I feel flattered and honored getting featured on your "Blog", thanks, mate! Basically, some infos about me and my hobby can be found on the Comicartfans Gallery Room of my art rep Kirk Dilbeck (HERE). Also, our mutual friend Joe Jusko was instrumental in getting some attention for me and my stuff. Here´s Joe´s gallery featuring some of my recreations (HERE). If you still need additional info, don´t hesitate to ask. Best,Michael

The New Header...Up Close and Personal!

Time to take a closer look at the new blog header, identify some of this fantastic artwork, and do some much deserved name-dropping!

The upper left corner features a dark haired beauty by Val Mayerik which appeared on the cover of Marvel's SSOC #22. Next to that, a classic Conan piece by Margaret Brundage (the cover of the May 1934 issue of Weird Tales), and just to the right of that is my favorite of these first few, a Boris Vallejo painting from SSOC #7!

Above the Boris piece is a Barry Windsor Smith Conan (a cover piece from Marvel's Conan the Barbarian Annual King Size #1). Nearby, an enraged Conan by none other than Gary Gianni, and I surely don't need to tell you who's responsible for the painting next to that (or for that matter, which of these three is my personal favorite)...if you don't know, then you're obviously lost, so click here and get lost bub!

To Arnie's right is some Gil Kane artwork (from Conan the Barbarian #67), and tucked under that Conan's armpit (pee-yew) is a Joe Kubert piece (look here)...to his immediate right, a John Ridgeway cover from the controversial Prion REH Conan book published in '09.

Last but not least, on the far right is a Joe Jusko painting from Marvel's SSOC #154, which I added because I went and made the blog wider (to hopefully address some technical issues), but more importantly because Joe needs to be represented...he's a superb artist, and a super nice guy to boot!

If I made any mistakes along the way, I've little doubt that someone will set me straight. And yah, I missed a couple in there, so if you fill us in on the artists responsible then you can come and claim your no-prize!

Of course there are many, many more Conan artists that could be added to this header, but that's one damn fine selection! If Crom gave a crap about your actions on this earth, I suspect that he'd be mighty proud of you Bliss!

Interview with Benito Gallego!

CROM! reader, and crusading blogger, MilkManX, whose blog, Rebirth of Classic Comic Art, is devoted to the continuing appreciation of old-school ink-under-your-nails style of art that we all grew up on, posted a brilliant interview with renowned artist and John Buscema "student", Benito Gallego, whose work stands out as some of the best of the best and reminds us all of the heyday of Marvel's Conan the Barbarian comics.

You can read the full article HERE, and visit Mr. Gallego's deviantArt gallery HERE.

Super-mega-crazy-hella-awesome thanks to MilkManX for posting such a killer interview and sharing it with the readers of CROM!
