What IV has done is commendable and unprecedented. I also think that most of us here do not know anything about the expenses incurred by IV team or money collected by IV team. It would be a good idea to be transparent in that aspect so that members can have a better understanding of the functioning of the organization and contribute appropriately. Just a suggestion; what do you guys think?
Definitely not a good idea to transperent for an org like IV. Dont forget that internet is open to any body in the whole wide world. Not fair to assume that only supports come here....people who oppose us come here to build strong cases against us and we dont want to fuel their efforts by opening things too much.
Have faith in IV, this is a 100% non-profit org, with no paid employees.

my 2 cents!!
if you are single and apply for 485 and get a EAD can still being ur wife from India on H4 as long as u DO NOT use EAD and DO NOT get 485 approved.
EAD to me has major benefits for the spouse. I think everyone agrees that 485 retrogression gona happen ... so if that happens u cannot get a 485 approval or add ur wife till almost close to 485 approval .. as ur PD wont be current. In this period u will never be able to use EAD as ur dependent will go out of H4 status ...
Also it is never recommended to use EAD and maintain H1 status ... so to me if you are single and have no plans as of yet to get married u will not use the interim benefits and pay EAD fee every year.
u will be in the 485 queue and if anything changes about green card u are atleast far enough to not to start ur application from beginning... also if for some reason u decide to use ur EAD the way around is ur wife to get another Visa like F1 ....

Rather than pushing for Bills which will pass only after we get a GC, why don't we ask for something more practical. I mean ask for minor policy changes rather than asking for major law changes.
Like,
1- granting EADs to all who have completed I-140,
2- reducing the timeframe to apply for AC21 from 6 months to 3 months,
This will solve a lot of people's immediate problems.

My 4 year old would sponsor my GC after 17 years. I have already made her sign the paper work. Who knows, after living 21 years in this country, she can change her mind too.:D:D:D

Discrimination on the line of payments will only lead to more mess....and more complaints...in the end people with common problem distance from each other. We all are in this together...we must solve it together including those that did not contribute a penny so far. All we can do is to convince those people to donate for the cause. You know our folks are not the best ...when it comes to donations:).(Not the religious)

I think SKIL bill is our only hope. Unlike CIR, it looks like this bill has been introduced in both the houses which is a good sign. This bill has more number of sponsers from the House than in the Senate. That's another good sign.

Here's an anecdote -
This was back in the late 80s, when I was growing up - in Bangalore.
India had just lost the Finals of a well fought [field] hockey match to Pakistan. We were all very disappointed by the loss, but it saddened me further to see a victory procession with waving Pakistani flags in the Muslim parts of the City.
Ofcourse, India is a secular country and more so the United States.. and you can cheer whoever you please..
But, If you chose to become a US Citizen, and US were in a battle with your country of Origin (let's narrow it down to Sports, to keep it less complicated), which country would you side? If I chose to side with my country of origin, it would make me a hypocrite, wouldn't it ?

We pay taxes PLUS Social Security for which we dont get any benefit. Dont miss that.
Let us be assertive about that.
Not sure if the social security taxes are for immigration benefits. Also, the taxes we pay are for several other services that we get in the US. Remember, even as non-citizens, we get millions of benefits such 911, clean roads, and the list will go on. Why do you think we want to immigrate in the first place? For example, if a law is passed to return to us all the taxes that we have paid but we must leave ASAP, how many will be in its favor?
I don't think this kind of an argument will hold any water with the press or lawmakers. There are other good VALID arguments, and we should stick to them.

Folks - another update on my case.
As i had been following up my case with the help from my Senator's office, they requested USCIS to give a written decision on my MTR.
Here is the written decision that USCIS gave
"On March 27, 2009, you filed a motion to reopen. You indicated the use of the applicant's ability to "port" under section 106(c) of the American Competitiveness in the 21st Century Act (AC21). The requirements were met and the motion to reopen was approved.
CONCLUSION: It is concluded that the grounds stated for denial have been overcome.
ORDER: It is ordered that the motion to reopen be approved. The Form I-485 is "pre-adjudicated" awaiting visa availability."
I hope this encourages people to go ahead with AC21

I am married too, but i only said that there are other easier paths aswell.
Regarding working late, i am a fulltime employee with H1-B and never came to office before 10:00AM and stayed after 6:00PM and never ever worked weekends. Mine can be an exceptional case, but what iam saying is, your relationship with your manager is important. This can make a lot of difference in your lives.
As long as you deliver what is expected of you, you can even work 4 days a week and get paid for 40 hrs per week.
I don't know, if we are deviating from our main discussion agenda started by LogicLife.

Your relationship with ur manager sort of defines how well you wud do. But then that makes ur h1b/Gc process "manager specific" ;). Plus you and I are lucky that we dont work long hours like some others, but the average H1B worker does. Like Logiclife said, it may not be coz the employer forces you to, but you do it anyway to make yourself more useful and avoid layoff issues. I am sure most of us at this stage are more worried about losing our jobs coz of H1/GC problems than actually finding jobs or having no savings.
Someone pointed up above that some say having a GC is better and some say having a Job is better. Here is what i think. If you have a GC atleast u can find another job even it takes 2-3 months. Micro-payments may be a better option for some people. Do we want to disallow those contributions as well? I guess we just have to make sure that we donot deny the people who want to pay but cannot.
Every $ counts, those who plan to contribute less than 50 bucks a month, remember to set yourself a monthly reminder, your pay date will be a good date to pick.
