Accident Under the Bridge - Available Light Photography

One night, my youngest son and I were out playing with the camera taking some hand-held available light photos.  No, we did not come upon an accident that just happened, but this shot of debris under a bridge made us think of one.  The lone tire, scattered debris, headlight shining on the bush from some upward area, and finally, a piece of driftwood lying face down with its right calf open and moist made for an interesting photograph.  Fortunately, nobody was directly injured, although I am sure that the tire and other junk can't be good for the environment, and during the day it is a real eyesore.

At about the same time, we also went out and took some pictures of the Perseids meteor shower using a tripod.  In addition to learning some cool things about art, nature, and science, he was learning about such boring inane things as shutter speed, aperture, depth of field, camera shake, focal length ......

In the end, after a slight diversion from a five foot rattlesnake making its way across the road in front of us as we looked for a place to park, our greatest fun was being up almost all night in the middle of nowhere looking up at the beautiful vast heavens and spending quite time together.

I will post some more night pictures on my website at http://www.BestDigitalShots.com

More Vikor!

For those of you who want to learn a bit more about the new Masters of the Universe Classics figure, known as Vikor, Poe Ghostal has posted an in-depth and simply glowing review of the action figure over at his site; Poe Ghostal's Points of Articulation. Head on over and check it out.
He even touches on the whole Conan/He-man myth (although he seems to agree with the whole Conan the Barbarian movie figures thing as a fallacy). But he does acknowledge the inspiration of Conan as noted in this original Vikor sketch from the late 70s...

In fact, while you're at it, swing on by Mark Taylor's website featuring a bunch of late 70s MOTU concept art (from which the original Vikor sketch came).

Also, if you want to put the myth to rest one and for all, I suggest reading Roger Sweet's book about the early days and development of He-man; Mastering the Universe. It's a tough read, and Sweet spends a lot of time bragging, but there are some very interesting insights to the early days of He-man's creation.

The plot thickens...

Red Carpet: SAG Awards 2011!

Eeeeeeee things are definitely starting to heat up in the fashion stakes this awards season! These lovely ladies were in fine form at the SAG Awards last night, and it is making me sooooo excited for The Academy Awards!

My pick of the night was Mila Kunis in Alexander McQueen.

Mila Kunis in Alexander McQueen.
A-MAY-ZING!! :) I love everything about this look, especially her shiny loose curls - perfection!

You all know how much I like red, so its no suprise that Mila is my favourite of the night.

Hilary Swank in Versace.
Hilary Swank also impressed in a nude Versace gown. She teamed this dress with va-va-voom hair for a very glamorous look - This is Hilary at her best!

Lea Michele in Oscar de la Renta.
Neutral colours were popular again, just like at the Golden Globes, with many of the ladies favouring beige, silver and whites.

Lea Michele looked fabulous in this simple stunning Oscar de la Renta gown! Love it!

Eva Longoria in Georges Hobeika.
Eva Longoria looked stunning in this grecian style Georges Hobeika gown. The colour looks amazing with her skin tone - Just gorgeous!!

Natalie Portman in
Azzaro.
Natalie Portman showed off her growing baby bump in this pretty Azzaro gown :) she looks so graceful and beautiful as always. Pregnacy obviously agrees with her :)

Heather Morris in Romona Keveza.
Glee's Heather Morris looked like a princess in her gorgeous blush Romona Keveza gown. She has been so stylish throughout this awards season - she is definitely one to watch!

Angie Harmon in Monique Lhuillier.
Angie Harmon stole the show in this stunning feathered Moniique Lhuillier creation! The colour is amazing on her!

Tina Fey in Oscar de la Renta.
Tina Fey usually finds herself on the Worst Dressed lists, but she finally got it right this time around in a classy Oscar de la Renta gown - Keep this up Tina, you look fabulous!

January Jones in Carolina Herrera.
Its always a surprise to see January in a designer other than Versace, but I think she looks so regal and stunning in this Carolina Herrera number. What are your thoughts? It seems like some critics hated this but I love it!

What are your thoughts everyone? Was there anyone I missed out? Let me know!! :)

Much Love xx

Terror On The Black Coast!

Printed as issue one of the second era of the Spanish fanzine Sword (which has been unavailable for some 15 years now) and undoubtedly an incredible find for any Spanish fan of Robert E. Howard as it's so rare that even the artist, Joseba Acebes Acha, has never seen a copy other than the one he owns, it's Terror En La Costa Negra (Terror On The Black Coast), a 48 page Conan adaptation of REH’s “Pigeons from Hell”!!

This REH classic totally gives me the hebejebes every time I read it, so you can imagine my joy (yup, a big s**t eating grin) when I first laid eyes on this particular Conan comic!

If Joseba’s memory serves him correctly, there were but 500 copies printed (a small number using the colored version for the cover), but it was never republished. Terror en La Costa Negra was his last (published) collaboration with Sword, and although Joseba now finds his artwork quite naive (it was, after all, only his eighth or ninth comic), he was still kind enough to share it with us. Joseba candidly explains:

“The second era of Sword began with "Terror en La Costa Negra" that took me over 3 years to finish because by the time I didn't have too much free time and I was determined to do a good job. I think it is better than my previous work and especially the backgrounds, but the characters are still rigid and change their appearance from page to page; and of course I had serious problems drawing tigers and lions (it looks like I didn't know their real size).”

Featuring a script by the one and only Carlos Yáñez García, an introduction by the immensely literate Manuel Barrero (as I quickly discovered while attempting to translate said introduction), and sent to us by none other Joseba himself, it's here for your viewing pleasure, and in English of course!

Download ALL 48 pages of Terror On The Black Coast via Megaupload by clicking  HERE and NOW, you flea-ridden Pict!

Personally, I consider Joseba’s contributions to Conan fandom to be both a hidden treasure and an utter delight, so Mitra’s blessings to you sir, both for sharing with us, as well as for your assistance with the English translation!

Oops, i almost forgot this: a card for the new year,
at the end of Terror On The Black Coast!

One last thing...Joseba's work has evolved greatly since this comic, as witnessed in my previous post, and as you’ll see for yourself soon enough!
